Vanlife

An off-grid MIDI sequencer for Max for Live

Vanlife is a free off-grid MIDI sequencer for Max for Live, inspired by Lewis Keller’s lk.offgrid-sequencer.

Steps can have different lengths, with boundaries you can drag freely or set using exact ratios. Each step has adjustable probabilities for playing a note, resting, tying the previous note, ratcheting, or playing a nested sequence.

Nested sequences work the same way as the main sequence, so you can build smaller patterns inside individual steps and give them their own subdivisions and probabilities. Ratchets can repeat evenly, speed up, or slow down, with controls for the probability of each repeat count and timing curve.

Features:

  • 1 to 64 steps per sequence, with freely adjustable lengths.

  • Set step lengths by ear or specify exact ratios.

  • Adjustable cycle length and note duration, including dotted and triplet values.

  • Per-step probability weights for notes, rests, ties, subdivisions, and ratchets.

  • Nested sequences with further nesting at each level.

  • 2 to 10 ratchet repeats, with steady, accelerating, or decelerating timing.

  • Pitch, velocity, and CC output modes.

  • 135 scales, with root and transposition controls.

  • Step values, boundaries, and probability weights exposed for automation and modulation.

  • 8 snapshot slots saved with your Live set.

Requires Ableton Live 12.2 or later with Max 9.
